Maintenance and Warranty Details for PTF Punjab E-Bikes

What Does the Warranty Cover?

Every electric bike distributed under the CM Punjab E-Bike Teacher Scheme 2026 comes with a manufacturer's warranty that covers the three most critical components: the battery, the electric motor, and the controller unit. For Model A, the warranty period is 12 months from the date of delivery. Model B extends the battery warranty to 18 months while keeping the motor and controller warranty at 12 months. Model C, the premium option, offers a full 24-month battery warranty and 12 months on all other components.

During the warranty period, any manufacturing defect in the covered components is repaired or replaced at no cost to the teacher. This includes issues like sudden battery capacity loss, motor overheating, controller malfunction, wiring harness failures, and display unit errors. The warranty does not cover damage caused by accidents, water submersion beyond the bike's rated protection level, unauthorized modifications, or normal wear-and-tear items like tires, brake pads, and handlebar grips.

Routine Maintenance Schedule

Unlike petrol motorcycles that need frequent oil changes, filter replacements, and carburetor adjustments, electric bikes require minimal routine maintenance. The recommended schedule is straightforward. Every month, check tire pressure and inflate to the recommended PSI printed on the tire sidewall. Every three months, inspect the brake pads for wear and adjust the brake cable tension if the brakes feel loose. Every six months, take the bike to an authorized service center for a comprehensive check-up covering the battery health, motor performance, wiring connections, and suspension components.

The six-monthly service is particularly important because the technician runs diagnostic software on the battery management system (BMS) to detect any cells that may be degrading faster than expected. Early detection of battery issues allows for targeted cell replacement rather than a full battery swap, saving significant cost. The first two six-monthly services are included free of charge under the warranty. Subsequent services cost between Rs. 1,500 and Rs. 3,000 depending on the model and the work required.

Authorized Service Center Network

The Punjab Teachers Foundation has ensured that authorized service centers are available in all 36 districts of Punjab. Each district has at least one designated service point, usually located near the district education office or in the main commercial area of the district headquarters. Major cities like Lahore, Faisalabad, Rawalpindi, Multan, and Gujranwala have multiple service centers to handle the higher volume of bikes in those areas.

Teachers can locate their nearest service center through the ptfpunjabgov.com portal or by calling the PTF helpline. Appointments can be booked online or by walk-in. During the warranty period, all parts and labor for covered repairs are free. The service center maintains a log of every visit, which is linked to the bike's serial number and the teacher's CNIC. This service history is important if a warranty claim needs to be escalated to the manufacturer.

Common Maintenance Tasks You Can Do at Home

Several basic maintenance tasks do not require a service center visit. Keeping the bike clean and dry extends the life of electrical connectors and prevents corrosion. Wipe down the bike with a damp cloth after rides in dusty conditions, but avoid spraying water directly onto the motor, controller, or charging port. Check that all bolts and screws are tight, especially the ones holding the battery compartment, rear carrier, and mudguards — vibration from rough roads can gradually loosen these over time.

Tire maintenance is simple but often neglected. Under-inflated tires reduce range by up to 15% because the motor works harder to overcome rolling resistance. They also increase tire wear and reduce braking efficiency. A basic floor pump with a pressure gauge costs Rs. 800 to Rs. 1,200 and is a worthwhile investment. Check pressure weekly, especially during summer when heat causes air to expand and temperature fluctuations can cause gradual pressure loss.

Battery Care and Longevity Tips

The battery is the most expensive single component of the e-bike, so proper care is essential. Always use the original charger provided with the bike — third-party chargers with incorrect voltage or amperage can damage the battery cells and void the warranty. Do not let the battery drain to 0% regularly; try to recharge when the level drops to 15-20%. Deep discharges stress the lithium-ion cells and accelerate degradation.

Avoid charging in extremely hot environments. If possible, charge the bike indoors or in a shaded area where the ambient temperature is below 40°C. Lithium-ion batteries degrade faster at high temperatures, and Punjab summers can push ambient temperatures beyond 45°C. For Model C, which has a removable battery, bringing the battery indoors for charging is highly recommended during peak summer months.

Post-Warranty Repair Costs

After the warranty expires, repair costs are borne by the teacher. However, the PTF has negotiated subsidized spare part rates with manufacturers. A full battery replacement, if needed after 3 to 5 years, costs approximately Rs. 25,000 to Rs. 40,000 depending on the model — significantly less than the Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 70,000 retail price. Motor replacements are rare but cost around Rs. 8,000 to Rs. 15,000 at subsidized rates. Controller units, which also seldom fail, are Rs. 3,000 to Rs. 6,000.

Maintenance Summary

Monthly: Check tire pressure | Quarterly: Inspect brakes | Every 6 months: Professional service | Battery tip: Never drain to 0%, charge in cool shade, use original charger only. Warranty covers battery, motor, and controller for 12-24 months depending on model.
